Fresh Air Fund - Looking for host Families for 2011

THE FRESH AIR FUND, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer vacations to more than 1.7 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Nearly 10,000 New York City children enjoy free Fresh Air Fund programs annually. In 2010, close to 5,000 children visited volunteer host families in suburbs and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada. 3,000 children also attended five Fresh Air camps on a 2,300-acre site in Fishkill, New York. The Fund’s year-round camping program serves an additional 2,000 young people each year.

The Summer of 2010 is almost over, but The Fresh Air Fund still needs loving host families. We are looking for families in the following areas to host THIS summer Red Hook, Columbia County, Saugerties, Delmar, Guilderland & Altamont, Latham and Rensselaer, NY. If you or someone you know is able to host, please sign up now.

In 2009, The Fresh Air Fund's Volunteer Host Family program, called Friendly Town, gave close to 5,000 New York City boys and girls, ages six to 18, free summer experiences in the country and the suburbs. Volunteer host families shared their friendship and homes up to two weeks or more in 13 Northeastern states from Virginia to Maine and Canada.

The Fresh Air Fund relies on donations to provide memorable summers to NYC children.

The Fresh Air Fund still needs hosts for the summer of 2010.

Thanks to host families who open up their homes for a few weeks each summer, children growing up in New York City's toughest neighborhoods have experienced the joys of Fresh Air experiences.

The Alfred Swing Dance Network will host a dance to raise funds for out of work employees and businesses affected by the recent major fire in downtown Alfred.

The dance will be on Sunday afternoon , Dec 6 from 2- 5pm. Please join ASDN for some swing dancing to great music for a good cause!

Music will be provided by DJ Graham Marks, featuring Big Band, Classic Swing, Rhythm and Blues, and a variety of tempos.

The evening will start with an introductory class for beginners at 2:00 pm. The Dance will start at 3:00 pm and go till 5:00pm. This event is open to everyone, all ages and all levels of experience. Beginners are especially welcome!

All events will take place in the beautiful restored ballroom on the second floor of the Alfred Village Hall, 7 West University St, Alfred, NY.

It is not necessary to have a partner to attend the class or dance. Dress is casual. Dancers are asked to bring clean, smooth-soled shoes to protect the dance floor. There are plenty of chairs and it will be easy to change from your street shoes.

In consideration of people with allergies, ASDN asks that dancers please do not use fragrances: perfumes, colognes, aftershaves, etc.

There will be a $10.00 admission to the dance.

The Third Annual Woodworking Wonders Weekend will be held on the Town Square in Port Allegany, PA.

Highly skilled craftsmen, craftswomen and artists showcase their original designs and one of kind pieces in hand carved wood at this

Portville Library's Youth Yard Sale

Portville Library's Youth Yard Sale will be held Friday, May 29^th 9 am 3 pm and Saturday, May 30^th 9 am to noon. The library is located at 2 North Main Street.

A large variety of gently used items have been donated by members of the Friends of the Library, staff members, Junior Friends and patrons to help support our children's programs. Household items, toys, and garage knickknacks can be found among the collection of interesting items. The children's department greatly appreciates everyone's charitable contributions.

Proceeds from this event cover the entire cost of our summer reading program, reading incentives throughout the school year and craft supplies for our Friday morning story hour.

Swing Dance Workshops and Evening Dance with The White Hots
Saturday April 4, 2009

Want to learn to swing dance? Already know the basics and want to learn more? ASDN will be hosting dance workshops in the morning and afternoon on Sat. April 4th in East Coast Swing with Ithaca's Cindy Overstreet. Megan Staffel, co-founder of ASDN said, "Cindy was a big hit at our Oct. dance and we are bringing her back by popular demand to teach again in Alfred. As always, beginners are most welcome and no partner is needed".

The morning class will focus on the fundamentals of East Coast Swing, or Jitterbug, This class will start at the beginning. As the morning progresses the emphasis will be on partnering and connection. This class is for beginners (no previous experience is needed) and moderately experienced dancers. The morning session runs from 9:30am to 12:15 pm. There will be plenty of breaks.

The afternoon class will move on from the basic steps and will focus on the why and how of moves that look cool and feel good. This class requires either the morning class, or some experience with basic swing moves. The afternoon session runs from 2:00 to 5:15 pm and will also have plenty of breaks.

Graham Marks, co-founder of ASDN said, " As an organization we are really pleased to be a recipient of a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Regrant Program administered by the Cattaraugus Arts Council. Because our classes are funded in part by this grant we are able to offer the classes at a really affordable rate. This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to start dancing or for experienced dancers to learn more."

In the evening there will be a dance with live music with a six-piece ensemble, The White Hots, from Rochester. Graham says, "This is a great dance band that really swings, a group of accomplished musicians that play the classic swing hits. It is impossible to stay in your seat". The dance goes from 7:30 to 10 pm.

All events are in the newly restored ballroom on the second floor of the Alfred Village Hall, 7 West University St., Alfred, NY 14802

in Bradford, on Saturday morning Sept 27, 2008 in the TOPS parking lot starting at 8am and ending around noon.

In honor of National Service Day, volunteers from the McKean County for Barack Obama campaign for change group, will be helping to raise money for our local Red Cross for Hurricane disaster relief in Bradford, PA.

We will have a 50/50, Chinese Auction with lots of donations from Bradford retailers, a bake sale, yard sale and voter registration (non-partisan) for anyone who needs to register to vote.

So come on out, tell your friends to stop by Tops on Saturday morning in Bradford to help support the Red Cross. Non clothing donations will be accepted as well.

The Alfred Swing Dance Network

Do you love to Swing Dance? Have you always wanted to learn but never had a partner that was interested? Rochester and Buffalo too far to drive for a dance? To remedy this situation, Graham Marks, Megan Staffel and Nancy Meyers have formed The Alfred Swing Dance Network (ASDN). The first dance will be held on Friday, Sept. 12 in the beautiful restored theatre on the second floor of the Alfred Village Hall, 7 West University St., Alfred, New York. The evening will start with a class for beginners at 7:00 pm and the Dance will start at 8:00 and go till 10:00pm. This event is open to everyone, all ages and all levels of experience. Beginners are especially welcome!

You do not need to know how to dance to attend. The beginning class will be taught by Gloria Betlem and Kent Divers, wonderful dancers, who have a dance studio in S. Lima, NY. This class will introduce the basics so that someone dancing for the first time will learn enough to have fun at the dance. The class is open to all, those with some experience who want a refresher and those who have never danced before.

It is not necessary to have a partner to attend the class or dance. The Alfred Swing Dance Network strives to create a friendly atmosphere, where dancers of different levels feel comfortable mixing and asking others to dance. Most swing dancers like to dance with many different partners in the course of the evening and in the swing dance world, it is common and welcomed, for women to ask men to dance.

Swing is not a single dance, but rather a family of related dances and has evolved into many expressions over the years. This includes Charleston, Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing and Balboa. The introductory class will teach the basics of East Coast Swing, also known as Jitterbug. Graham Marks will DJ, and the musical selections will feature Big Band, Classic swing, Rhythm and Blues, and a variety of tempos.

Dress is casual . Dancers are asked to bring clean, soft-soled, non-marking shoes to protect the dance floor. There are plenty of chairs and it will be easy to change from your street shoes.

It seems as though there are many bloggers and website professionals getting into putting their home town of Olean, NY 'on the web' per se. When I first started this blog I wanted to have one place to go to find current events and/or entertainment going on in the area and I tried to create a place for people to get excited to post their fund raisers, gatherings or events.

Between my day job and my lack of experience in HTML, I've decided to leave this blog here as it does have alot of links that I am personally interested in and I did put alot of time and effort into making it professional. I'll eventually be adding some shopping links and whatever comes across that I feel as though I would be able to publish without running into any copywright issues.

There are many excellent resources for entertainment in the Olean area. Some of which you will find by checking out the sidebar of my blog and other web sites. Olean NY Entertainment is alive and well and there is always something going on. Just wish there weren't so many places to post about it. *smile*

Third Annual Heart of the Alleghenies Folk Music Festival, August 11-13, 2006

History and Mission
The Heart of the Alleghenies Folk Music Festival began in 2004 at Houghton College. We used the same model as the Cook Forest Dulcimer Gathering, Juniata Folk College, and Greenwood Furnace Folk Gathering, which combine workshops, jamming, concerts, and open stage. The Heart of the Alleghenies Folk Music Festival also added a strong contra element. Jodi Blumenthal of Hey Diddle Diddle called the first contra dance for the festival.

Until Cook Forest reorganizes we are happy to offer a regional alternative at the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford in first-rate, fully air-conditioned facilities at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford in Bradford, PA. The alumni of Cook Forest look forward to joining Juniata Folk College and Greenwood Furnace Folk Gathering in keeping the festivals available in the region.

Welcome to Freefall Oz in Ceres, NY. Located right behind what used to be Faulkner's Fruit Stand. I missed their last party and still regret not going. My brother and nephews did sky dive that day and they loved it so much, they're doing it again. I'm hoping to spread the word to get more folks out there. From what I hear, Oz (the owner) puts on a heck of a party. So bring your tent and your party mode and have a great time. The August, Otter Boogie, has already been scheduled as well. Although our season will be underway, we are having a MINI kick-off the season Cessna Boogie. To be held May 12th, 2006. Rain or Shine.

Bradford Stink Fest

Today, May 6th, 2006, Bradford, PA will be holding there 5th annual Stink Fest in celebration of the wild onion (that's the best comparison I can relate it to) which grows in our area in abundance. It carries a very pungent odor along with it, but is considered a delicacy in this area. In some parts of the country they are called ramps. In my world, they're simply yummy.

So what is the answer to having decent FM radio in our area. It's pretty sad when I get to the top of Barnum Road and I lose the only decent radio station (other than the Big Pig - luv ya Jesse) and it's run by St. Bonaventure. That's the only time my son will turn off the CD player to tune into the radio because they place hip hop and dance music. Is our only answer XM Radio? I wish we had better music on the Pennsylvania side. One day maybe huh :-)

I was pleased to come across this website which supports local live music in the Olean, NY and surrounding areas. Some places mentioned on this website are:

Breadstix in Olean which is an awesome place to eat dinner and they make excellent margaritas. It's not a very big restaurant, but very tasty. I highly recommend this for your next night out.

THE PRESS BOX in Olean. I've only been there a couple of times. I guess I have not hit it on a good night, so I'll leave my opinions at the door for now. Maybe I'll have to check em out again on April 29th. Zephyr is playing there that night, so I'll be able to have a better opinion on the sound proofing that night. Karaoke didn't set with me very well, the one time I went, but it might have been the ones who were running the Karaoke. Stay tuned for that. Who in the heck is Charlie and the Tunas. I hear that Lisa & Paul is Lisa who used to be the lead singer in Nobody's Fool out of Bradford. Now that girl can kick butt. She is a very talented rocker. Rock on Lisa. Should be interesting to see this duo.

I heard this band back in February at The Glenn in Farmer's Valley. These guys were awesome in my opinion, but I tend to like music from the late 60's and 70's, a bit of good biker music and just some good memories. In the form of entertainment, there isn't really much to do in Bradford PA. We have Louie's Lounge, which I've been to once. For a college town, you'd think there would be alot more happening there. Players is about the busiest club going there. Luckily, I personally enjoy the music they play. Check them out on a Saturday night around 11pm. The place gets very busy. If you like hip hop and dance music, that is the place to be.

Close to 5,000 New York City children visit volunteer host families in the Northeast for two weeks or longer each summer through The Fresh Air Funds Friendly Town program. They can run their hands and toes through freshly cut grass, skip over a sprinkler and watch the night sky fill with stars. As a host, you can help more children from low-income neighborhoods in New York City experience the simple summer pleasures of the Olean, NY; Bradford, PA; and surrounding areas.

This was a wonderful experience for the whole family. Shanelle felt comfortable with all of us very quickly and likewise we felt the same. She was a total pleasure to host and a real breath of Fresh Air! said a Fresh Air host. Many families find their hosting experiences so rewarding that over 65 percent of all children are reinvited to stay with host families, year after year.

This year, The Fresh Air Fund needs more families to volunteer as hosts for the Friendly Town program. There are no financial requirements, and the host family can choose the age and gender of their visitor; all that is needed is time and love. First-time visitors range in age from six to 12 and can be invited back through The Fund until age 18.

I love where I live. Getting to know someone totally is the most important
thing in any relationship. Friendship is the most important thing that two
people can share. Communication and honesty is key!! To be able to relax
and be yourself, knowing you have no hidden drama or issues in your life

Here are just a few things I love about living in the country: the farms,
rolling hills, wild animals, deer grazing. Just to name a few. It's difficult
to describe the full effect in a picturesque and eloquent manner. It's
simply beautiful. Did I mention that thunderstorms from the porch are
awesome to observe? *wink* I enjoy going out for dinner or staying at
home, being surrounded by family, friends, going to a store, or festival,
woodworking with guidance, gardening, fishing, movies, bowling, and
auctions, but mostly I love to be outside. I love spending time around
the campfire. If there's a party, I'm there with a smile and a laugh. My
job keeps me very busy, and I'd like to have more fun.

I'm missing that companion to spend those times with. Could that
person be you? One would call me: BBW = big, beautiful woman with
a very warm smile and a big heart. :-) My son is very active and my
sweetheart. I prefer not to fill in the "income question" on surveys.
I consider myself financially secure. I am mostly (but not only)
attracted to clean cut blue-collar men (sounds oxymoronic), someone
my own age and/or mentality (I have been known to have silly

Coudersport Still Respect the Rigases

Since December, Adelphia Communications NW PA general manager Thomas Carey has had a side job: overseeing the system in Coudersport, the central Pennsylvania city where John Rigas founded Adelphia.

Under a post-bankruptcy agreement, control of the system will switch from Adelphia to the Rigas family. Coudersport has slightly more than 5,000 customers, and the deal includes ownership of systems reaching households in nearby Port Allegany and Emporium.

The immediate challenge for Carey is to make the regime change in Coudersport smooth for customers and Adelphia employees. Of 9 employees based in Coudersport, 8 will stay when the Rigases assume control.

It was on Adelphia area VP Tom Haywood's recommendation that Coudersport was added to Carey's load last December. Prior to that, Adelphia's Olean, N.Y., system GM Darlene Lake was the overseer. When Lake's role was expanded to include regional supervision of dispatch operations (system employees assigned to install and service calls), Haywood turned over Coudersport to Carey, even though the distance between Erie County and Coudersport is more than 100 miles. "He knows the state and was more than willing to take over, so it made sense," Haywood says.

Carey travels to Coudersport at least once a month, and says employee morale is solid. "It's a Main Street, U.S.A., town where everybody knows your name and you can talk to anyone in a quaint, friendly atmosphere," Carey says. "The employees there, in spite of everything, still have a level of respect for the Rigas family. They are willing to give whoever in the family will run that system a chance."

At this point, there's no indication of who that will be. The employees there "are happy they have a job, and they will do a wonderful job for whoever's in charge," Haywood predicts.

I being a resident of this general "Coudersport" area, fully
believe it would be crazy for Time Warner to shut down the
offices in Coudersport. We have hardworkers who live in
this area and they are very dedicated to this community
and the company which John Rigas built. Sure, there are
a few very bitter folks, but not everyone feels that way. I
think it would be a wise move for Time Warner to just
keep things going in this area. Now if they would just
expand on their services to the rest of the customers in
this area. I live within one mile of established cable
service, currently being provided by ZitoMedia who
originally was Adelphia. I hope that they will get the rest
of the folks in this area connected so that we too can enjoy
cable service for our internets. This would truly open up
so many more opportunities for myself personally and others
as well. It's frustrating to me, living so darn close to existing
service. I say expand, expand!! We need more employment
opportunities in this area and cable is what I'm hoping will
be my "ticket" to allowing me to take better care of myself
and child. I've been waiting for 5 years now and I say it's
about time to send the crews out and lay that cable.

I don't ever have the time or money to read the newspaper, so if nothing else, I learn about the names of the companies who service our area. I find it interesting the blogging I've been doing.

So anyway, I'm glad they found this wreckage. Good for the families so they can carry on and I'm sorry it happened.

Search for emergency helicopter called off due to darkness

BRADFORD, Pa. (AP) _ Rescue and recovery crews ran out of daylight Saturday and called off their search for an emergency medical helicopter that went missing while on a five-minute refueling flight Friday night.

he search was called off shortly after 6 p.m. due to darkness and misty conditions near Bradford Regional Airport, where the LifeStar helicopter was last in radio contact with the ground at 11:41 p.m. Friday, said Richard L. Gibbons, chief executive officer of Erie-based Emergycare Inc., which owns the helicopter.

The LifeStar helicopter left Kane Community Hospital, about 75 miles southeast of Erie, with only the pilot on board at 11:36 p.m. Friday. The helicopter was to refuel at Bradford Regional Airport but never landed even though the pilot had radioed to say he was on his final approach.

Emergency crews on the ground and in the air were to resume their search Sunday morning, Gibbons said. Crews were searching Saturday in the area northeast of the airport, where air traffic controllers in Cleveland last had contact with the helicopter.

LifeStar helicopters fly out of St. Vincent Medical Center and Hamot Medical centers in Erie and serve several counties in northwestern Pennsylvania, southwestern New York and northeastern Ohio, Gibbons said.

Failed to pay $300 million in taxes

The founder of Adelphia Communications Corp. and his son, both already convicted of a massive fraud at the bankrupt cable-television company, have been indicted on charges they and other family members failed to pay $300 million in taxes.

Former Chief Executive Officer John J. Rigas failed to report income of $143 million and his son Timothy J. Rigas, the company's former chief financial officer, failed to report income of $239 million, according to a federal grand jury indictment unsealed in Williamsport, Pa., yesterday.

"They are not above the law," said Peter S. Alvarado, special agent in charge of the Internal Revenue Service criminal investigation division.

Vic Vena Pharmacy helps fellow man

Olean group driving three new “homes” to hurricane victims in Louisiana, so
if you see a trailer home outside Vic Vena Pharmacy for the next few days, don’t hesitate to put socks and flashlights in it.

The trailer is one of three that Mr. Vena and a handful of volunteers plan to personally deliver, loaded with needed items, to a fellow pharmacist’s employees who lost their homes in the wake of Hurricane Rita.

“We have three camping trailers going down,” Mr. Vena said. “That’s what those folks will probably live in for the next year to 18 months, at least.”

The trailers, attained through the help of Don Laird at Lime Lake Marine and RV in Machias, will house some of the five families who currently share the same two-bedroom apartment in Louisiana.

Mr. Vena said he couldn’t get the welfare of his friend Michael Casso off his mind after hurricanes Katrina and Rita rolled through the Gulf Coast. Mr. Casso, a clinical nutritionist and intravenous chemotherapy specialist, owns two wellness store pharmacies in Metairie, La. The two men became friends after attending natural medicine conferences in Dallas, Texas and Biloxi, Miss.

He contacted Mr. Casso after Katrina hit to see if he needed any help. Mr. Casso thanked him for his generosity, but said he and his family were fine.

“I asked if there was anything we could do,” said Mr. Vena. “He said, ‘No, we can’t even get UPS.’ I kind of gave up on the idea, actually.”

During the following hurricane, Rita, Mr. Vena said he heard from news reports that Mr. Casso’s area had received a tremendous storm surge and was actually shut down.

When he finally reached Mr. Casso again, the news wasn’t so promising.

“He was OK and his family was OK, he just seemed like something was on his mind,” said Mr. Vena. “I said, ‘Well, what’s the matter?’ And he told me, ‘Vic, all these families that work for me are homeless and I can’t do anything for them.”

“I sat back and said, ‘Wow, if my employees were homeless, how could I keep their morale up?’ All they had with them was their luggage when they evacuated.”

Mr. Casso told him the families were all crammed into a tiny apartment and were unable to purchase reasonable trailer homes due to price gouging.

They sure were not hurtin'

John Rigas founded the cable-television company in 1952 with a $300 investment. Hailed as a hero in his hometown of Coudersport, Pa., for supporting various causes, he is now 80 and in ill health.

He was found guilty earlier this year of using complicated cash-management systems to spread money around to various family-owned entities and as a cover for stealing about $100 million, which caused the company to go bankrupt.

Timothy, the son of John Rigas, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison, while the elder Rigas was sentenced to 15 years. Although he could die behind bars, his sentence could be cut short if he has served at least two years and his doctors believe he has less than three months to live.

CNN noted that federal prisons, although unpleasant, are much less dangerous places for inmates than the state prisons where the Tyco executives will spending their coming years.

The elder Rigas, along with his wife, Doris, owns a 4,400-square-foot condominium in the Greystone project at Beaver Creek. County assessors estimate its value at $3.8 million. Timothy Rigas, has a 3,000-square-foot condo at One Beaver Creek Condos for which he paid $2.4 million in 1997.

Public records tend to lag sales by about a month, but so far show no sale of the properties purchased by either Kozlowski or the Rigas family.

Allegany, NY: Police seek help finding shooter of UPS worker

This is so unfortunate to hear about these things happening in our community. I realize this is primarily for social functions, but this certainly would impact our social lives when there are shooters running loose.

Police are still searching for the man who shot a 25-year-old female UPS worker Monday in the UPS parking lot off East Union Street in Allegany.

Troopers are asking for the public’s help in tracking the gunman down. Anyone with information about the shooting or anyone who may have heard or seen something unusual early Monday morning near the UPS building is asked to call 373-2550.

The victim, Jessica Lawrence, 25, of Olean was shot twice in the arm. She was treated at Olean General Hospital and released. Ms. Lawrence is a loading dock supervisor at UPS in Allegany.

State Police Senior Investigator John Wolf is in charge of the investigation. He said this morning that troopers have no suspects yet.

“The investigation continues,” he said. “We’re running down some leads right now.”

Technician talent now a high school issue

Coudersport High School starts an Ambassador program amongst students. This sounds like a great program.

Rachel Minard, guidance counselor at the Coudersport Junior Senior High School in Coudersport, Pa., is trying another method to help students prepare for life after high school. She has put together a group of students she calls ambassadors who will study the needs of employers and the kinds of jobs available and then inform the school’s students about those and other job issues. “This is kind of unique. I’ve given the students the framework and at the beginning of the school year we’re going to start having meetings about the standards for career education and work. The students will develop the program, they will do the research, they will get out into the community and spend some time with employers,” says Minard.

The ambassador program is aimed at giving students general job information, but Minard hopes it will open student’s eyes to the variety of jobs available, including technical jobs such as collision repair. “One of the things that kids don’t realize is that technical jobs like collision repair aren’t your old time dirty garage kind of job, but it’s highly technical and there’s good money there,” she says. Minard hopes that receiving information about employers from their peers will help students to prepare for careers both in the classroom and out

Steel drums to hit Olean

I think this sounds fabulous. I love this type of music. Anyone else?

Kali McDae, the drum's creator noted "Olean, NY needs a little spice and think I have just the solution. I propose that the community of Olean help in this project as much as possible. I would like to use my knowledge of steelpan and do something useful for the city. A steelband would be the perfect alternative for activities in which the young people of Olean can engage. Steelbands are popping up in school systems all over the country and I don't see why Olean should be left out. I propose that with the help of the community we give Olean a steelband, I and my team of builders would be responsible for the construction of the drums but we need support as far as a facility to do the building and house the drums. I've been in contact with Nate Smith of Olean's Worth W Smith and he has been very generous in helping me out with 55 gallon oil barrels and tools to build the pans. Now a year later I would like to take this to another level and involve as much of the community as possible. Anyone who would like to donate tools such as new or used sledge hammers please contact me, there is no tool that will be turned down."

Pitt-Bradford to host Norman Rockwell collection

On Friday a reception for the opening of the Campbells’ exhibit titled “Norman Rockwell: A Personal Collection” will be held at the KOA Art Gallery in Blaisdell Hall at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
The reception will follow a lecture at 7:30 p.m. by a speaker.
The exhibit, 11 original pieces of Rockwell artwork from the Campbells’ personal collection, will be displayed through Nov. 7 and will be the first of its kind in the region. The reception is free and open to the public and will be followed by a lecture at 7:30 p.m. by a guest speaker. For the Campbells, who are natives of Bradford and alumni of Pitt-Bradford, the exhibit is a way of honoring their hometown college.
